Kensington and Chelsea Liberal Democrats are very sad to learn of the death of Earl Russell, to whom the party owes a great debt. Without him, the party would not be as strong and united as it is today. We will miss Conrad greatly and cherish our memories of him.
Kensington and Chelsea membership secretary and former chair of the London Region, Brian Orrell, says:
"To me, Conrad was the touchstone of the Party, its guiding spirit, its light. He was an intellectual giant imbued with the unique gift of humility. His speeches were jewels of wit and wisdom. He is truly irreplaceable.
"Local members still talk about the memorable Food for Thought evening with Conrad five years ago. This was a specially commissioned talk sponsored by the Liberal Democrat History Group. The subject was Scotland and the talk was tantalizingly entitled 'Devolution for Scotland - a History Lesson for Tony Blair'. For forty minutes, Conrad entranced his audience with a masterly exposition of events leading up to the Act of Union in 1701 and the comparisons with the Scotland Act of 1998. A fascinating subject spiced with his razor-sharp wit. It was the best attended Food for Thought we have ever held."
Conrad Russell, historian and politician, was president of the Brent local party, and president of the London region in 2000. He was born on 15th April 1937 and died on 14th October 2004.
