Imperial College played host to Liberal Democrat frontbench MP, Lembit Öpik, on 9th February. Students and local people packed into a seminary hall to hear Öpik, who is the party's Shadow Welsh Secretary and Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, give a talk entitled "Why Be A Lib Dem?"
During a speech which celebrated the Lib Dems as a break from what he called the "ceaselessly depressing" combative style of politics, Öpik also endorsed Jenny Kingsley, Kensington & Chelsea's prospective parliamentary candidate for the Lib Dems.
He said:
"Kensington & Chelsea has a fine candidate in Jenny - with the local knowledge and enthusiasm to represent people in this fine part of London."
Öpik told attendees at the meeting: "The Lib Dems are the fastest growing party in parliament." He also spoke about his belief that voters are not turned off by idealism in politics, and prefer to hear from politicians who are honest about what they believe. "Lib Dems have an ambition for Britain," he said.
Commenting on his invitation to Imperial by Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster Borough Lib Dems, the two local Liberal Democrat parties that the university borders, Öpik said:
"I'm delighted to see such a great turn out tonight - but I'm not surprised. Increasingly, Lib Dems - with our policies of freedom and fairness - are the party of choice."
