Jenny with local residents
The Labour government is planning massive Council Tax rises AFTER the General Election. This year's bills have been kept artificially low by a one-off pre-election fix. When Tony Blair embarks on revaluation, homes in areas where property prices have sky rocketed such as Kensington and Chelsea will move up one band or two or more. Many residents will face prohibitive Council Tax bills of at least several hundred pounds or more annually.
In Cardiff, where revaluation has just taken place, 64% of homes moved up, only 2% moved down.
"Council Tax was unfair when Michael Howard's Conservatives invented it. Labour's Council Tax revaluation will make it worse," warns Jenny Kingsley, Lib Dem candidate for Kensington & Chelsea.
"The only way to address the injustice of the present system is to scrap Council Tax altogether and replace it with a system of local income tax based on your ability to pay, not the value of your property.
"This guarantees the most help to vulnerable pensioners. Under our system, 56% of all pensioners nationwide will be lifted out of local taxation completely."
