Jenny with students: Lib Dems would SCRAP student fees
Jenny Kingsley, Lib Dem candidate for Kensington & Chelsea at the election on 5th May, believes that the Labour government has been secretive about taxation. Meanwhile, of Michael Howard's claimed annual savings of £35bn, £22bn are already in the Government's plans and £8bn has been shown to be ludicrously unrealistic.
The remainder includes cuts to the New Deal, affordable housing, Jobcentre Plus, and environmental protection. "These cuts would hit some of the most vulnerable people in Britain. Where is the justice in that?" asks Jenny.
The Lib Dems do not believe in raising the over-all tax burden. Our policies on tax are clear, honest and fully costed. We'll introduce a new top rate of income tax of 50p in the pound - but only for every pound earned above £100,000, and even then they will still be paying less tax than they did during most of Margaret Thatcher's premiership. "This will affect 1% of the workforce," Jenny comments.
We will use the revenue to abolish tuition and top up fees for university students. And we will also provide free personal care for the elderly. Under the Lib Dems, no one would have to sell their home to pay for care.
We have already put these policies into practice in Scotland, where we are in Government.
