Jenny Kingsley, the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Kensington & Chelsea, has welcomed new research showing overwhelming support for the Lib Dem's taxation policy at this General Election.
Published on 12th April, the survey by NOP, commissioned by the party, found that the vast majority (75%) of voters would be in favour of a new 50% income tax rate on earnings over £100,000 if the money generated from this tax is used for
1) abolishing tuition and top-up fees;
2) introducing free personal care for the elderly;
3) keeping local taxes down.
Over six out of ten (61%) voters who expressed an opinion said that a political party claiming, as the Conservatives do, to spend as much as Labour but at the same time cut taxes through reducing waste would not be able to do this if they were to form the next government.
Responding to the survey, Jenny Kingsley said:
"People are responding to our honesty about the new tax rate. It affects only 1% of the population, and the over-all taxation burden of the nation will not rise.
"In addition to this, we have been explicit about the need to cut low priority programmes such as the Child Trust Fund, ID cards and industrial subsidies to pay for our priorities including higher pensions, 10,000 more police and lower class sizes.
The launch of the Lib Dem manifesto was delayed due to the birth of leader Charles Kennedy's son, Donald James, but when it is published, the party will also publish its full costings. Jenny explains:
"The sums add up and the books are balanced. So they will be open with pride for all to see."
