The Cromwell Road in Kensington is 2nd most polluted road in Britain

Charles Kennedy has underscored the Liberal Democrats' commitment to the environment by highlighting the 'Green Thread' that runs throughout Liberal Democrat policy. Jenny Kingsley, Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Kensington & Chelsea, welcomed the focus on environmental issues, saying: "Kensington & Chelsea is home to the second most polluted road in Britain - the Cromwell Road, a street with levels of nitrogen dioxide double the level that the government target."

"We in the Lib Dems understand that environmental concerns are not stand-alone issues but must run through every aspect of our policy. We are the only viable green alternative," said Jenny,

Speaking on 15th April, Mr. Kennedy confirmed that the Lib Dems are committed to:

Britain taking the lead on negotiations for the next set of targets for greenhouse gas emissions
Recycling 60% of all household waste by 2012
20% of electricity generated by renewable sources by 2020
Cutting back Labour's road-building programme
No commercial GM crops, unless they are proved to be safe for people and the environment
A moratorium on new incinerators and no new nuclear power stations
