In a massive boost to one of our most distinctive policies, it has been revealed that most people want British troops withdrawn from Iraq by the end of this year, according to a poll by NOP for The Independent of 26th April. By a margin of 3-1, voters want British forces to come home by the time their United Nations mandate expires in December 2005. Sixty per cent of people, and 58 per cent of Labour supporters, want to see the troops withdrawn by then, and only 19 per cent disagree.
Jenny Kingsley, Lib Dem Candidate for Kensington and Chelsea said:
"Of course we support the transition to a fully democratic and legitimate government, and the superb work of British troops. But the open-ended presence of coalition forces is destabilising - the objective should be phased withdrawal of British forces by the expiry of the UN mandate at the end of this year. The NOP survey suggests that the majority of the population agree with us."
