Jenny Kingsley
An article in the Kensington Times of 27th April has examined a decision taken behind residents' backs to lease a strip of the popular Cremorne Gardens in South West Chelsea to builders during a development of Chelsea Wharf. Jenny Kingsley, Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Kensington & Chelsea and a councillor for the Cremorne ward, is quoted in the front-page article about the decision made behind closed doors.
"A decision which involves the loss of a valuable public amenity should have been made only after consultation with those affected," said Jenny.
"The council all too often operates on the basis that 'Nanny knows best' and very little account is taken of the views of the public."
The newspaper reports that the deal was made after developers Octagon, who are set to build 12 new flats on the banks of the Thames, offered £650,000 in rent for a two-year lease of a 15-metre strip of Cremorne Park. This would allow them to erect scaffolding and provide room for storage and portacabins.
The Kensington Times continues: "But residents in the area who are used to enjoying the peace and quiet of the park are angry because they were not consulted." The paper then interviews several residents who express their anger.
According to the Times, Tory Councillor Steven Redman "could not remember whether residents had been consulted or not."
