Liberal Democrat Councillor Carol Caruana

Councillor Carol Caruana is featured in the 'Question Time' column of the August issue of the 'Royal Borough' newspaper, which is published by the Council. In 2009, the Lib Dems made a historic breakthrough when Carol Caruana was elected councillor for Colville (Notting Hill) with more votes than Labour and the Conservatives combined. The first elected Lib Dem councillor in the Borough, Carol was subsequently re-elected in May 2010 alongside new Councillor Tim Jones. They have since formed the first ever Lib Dem Group on Kensington & Chelsea Council.

COUNCILLOR QUESTION TIME:

When did you first consider becoming a Councillor?

"I'd been a campaigner for ages,so it just sort of happened. I didn't need much convincing."

How did you feel when you were elected?

"Humbled and excited."

What is the most rewarding part of being a Councillor?

"When it's possible to solve a resident's problem."

And the least…?

"When it isn't, however hard one tries."

What are your ambitions in the political sphere?

"I have no political ambitions beyond being a Councillor."

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you since becoming a Councillor?

"When a little boy asked me if being a Councillor meant I could stop wars; I wish!"

A favourite song or piece of music?

"Chopin's Nocturnes, especially No. 2."

A favourite part of, or place in, the borough?

"Portobello Road."

A recommended place to eat?

"Maggie Jones, Old Court Place, W8."

If you could take a holiday anywhere in the world, where would you go?

"The Catalonia region of northern Spain."

What are the main concerns raised at your surgeries?

"Housing and planning."

How many hours a week, on average, do you spend on Council work?

"It varies; when I started it was between 15 and 20 but now it is more than that."

What one thing are you most proud of doing as a Councillor?

"Helping a family to be rehoused while their flat was being renovated."

If you could have one wish granted for yourself what would it be?

"To see a fairer society."

If you could have a wish granted for everybody what might it be?

"Good health and happiness."
