A by-election will be held on Thursday 6th October to elect a new councillor for the Norland ward of Kensington, following the resignation of a Conservative councillor. The Conservative ex-councillor appeared in court last week on charges relating to child and animal pornography.
Norland is the neighbouring ward to the Liberal Democrat held Colville ward in Notting Hill and stretches down to Holland Park Avenue.
The Lib Dems are going into the election having gained THREE new councillors in Kensington in the space of two years, winning off both the Conservatives and Labour. Labour have not won a by-election in Kensington & Chelsea in recent times.
The Leader of the Liberal Democrats in Kensington & Chelsea, Councillor Carol Caruana, said:
"Leadership is needed to restore trust among residents. Not just after this particularly unpleasant scandal but actually in more general terms.
"So many residents here feel utterly let down and taken for granted by a Conservative party locally that is aloof and stale from being in power seemingly since time began.
Local councillors are supposed to be visible and active. Standing up for local residents. Standing up to developers who want to cash in at the expense of the community. Fighting for independent shops and small business.
"It's time to restore decency and trust to local democracy in our area."
The Liberal Democrats will be announcing their candidate on Friday 9th September.
